You figured “the change of life” would bring fewer menstrual periods and possibly hot flashes, but you weren’t prepared to constantly feel dry and irritated “down there.” Find out how to get lasting relief from perimenopausal vaginal dryness.

If perimenopause has left you with irritated vaginal tissues and a diminished lubrication response, you’re not alone. Chronic vaginal dryness is a common effect of the change of life that many women find themselves coping with as their estrogen levels dwindle.

Luckily, you don’t have to live with vaginal dryness and its bothersome effects. Our women’s wellness team at Panhandle Obstetrics and Gynecology in Amarillo, Texas, offers a full scope of solutions — from simple self-care strategies and lifestyle changes to medical treatment — so you can feel like yourself again.

Vaginal dryness or vaginal atrophy?

Persistent vaginal dryness during perimenopause is typically a sign of vaginal atrophy, a chronic condition caused by estrogen loss that leads the tissues lining your vaginal canal to become gradually drier, thinner, and less elastic.

Like most perimenopausal symptoms, vaginal atrophy is the result of estrogen loss. Estrogen plays a major role in sustaining balanced, well-lubricated, healthy vaginal tissues; as hormone levels drop, these tissues tend to become drier, thinner, and more delicate.

While ongoing vaginal dryness is the most prevalent hallmark of vaginal atrophy, the condition can also cause:

  • Chronically irritated vaginal canal tissues
  • Constant burning or itching sensations
  • Poor lubrication response before sex
  • Painful intercourse; bleeding during sex
  • Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Emerging urinary incontinence (leakage)

Research shows that nearly one in five (19.2%) women going through perimenopause in their forties start to experience some degree of vaginal atrophy, with vaginal dryness being the most common complaint. By the time most women reach menopause in their fifties, more than half (53.8%) experience the problem.

Lasting relief from vaginal dryness

Treatment for vaginal dryness depends on its severity and related effects. You may benefit from a combination of therapies, or you may find effective relief with just one approach.

For immediate relief

The fastest way to relieve vaginal dryness is with an over-the-counter self-care product. Vaginal moisturizers are a long-lasting, hormone-free first line of defense; apply your chosen product a few times a week to keep your tissues hydrated.

Before sex, apply a water-based lubricant to reduce friction and discomfort.

Lifestyle adjustments

Certain lifestyle and self-care adjustments can help you avoid worsening vaginal dryness. When bathing, wash your vulva with plain water or a gentle cleanser made for sensitive skin; avoid scented soaps, bubble baths, and douching, which can disrupt your natural vaginal pH.

It’s also helpful to wear breathable clothing most of the time; opt for loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid wearing tight, synthetic workout gear for extended periods.

Prescription treatments

Many women find relief from vaginal dryness with some form of hormone therapy:

1. Vaginal estrogen therapy

Low-dose estrogen, applied locally via a cream, tablet, or flexible ring, directly supports the restoration of vaginal tissue health without raising your systemic hormone levels.

2. DHEA vaginal inserts

Prescription DHEA vaginal inserts (e.g., prasterone) are metabolized directly into active androgens and estrogens within your vaginal tissues, leading to improved elasticity and moisture without affecting your overall estrogen levels.

3. Hormone replacement therapy

If your vaginal dryness is accompanied by other perimenopausal symptoms — like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, brain fog, or trouble sleeping — systemic hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can be delivered in various forms (such as pills, patches, or pellets), may be an effective long‑term solution.

Noninvasive laser therapy

MonaLisa Touch® is a noninvasive, therapeutic laser treatment that promotes the production of collagen, glycogen, and hyaluronic acid to support healthier vaginal tissue.

In a series of short treatment sessions, MonaLisa Touch can improve vaginal dryness and other symptoms for many women by stimulating collagen and other components of healthy tissue.
