What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of your uterus. It is never the first course of treatment, but is sometimes necessary when more conservative treatments fail to achieve the desired results. 

In some cases, additional reproductive organs are also removed during a hysterectomy procedure. Your cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes may also need to be removed, depending on the reason for your procedure. 

At Panhandle Obstetrics and Gynecology, the da Vinci® Robotic Surgery platform is used to perform most hysterectomy procedures done at the practice. This minimally invasive surgical approach allows effective tissue removal using small incisions.

Why would a woman need a hysterectomy?

• Uterine cancer
• Cervical cancer
• Uterine fibroids 
• Pelvic pain that has not improved after other treatments

• Uterine prolapse

What is the recovery process like after a hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy usually takes between 1-3 hours, depending on the type of surgical techniques used and the amount of tissue that needs to be removed. You can usually go home the same day, but an abdominal open surgery might require a few days in the hospital. 

Your recovery process will depend on the amount of tissue removed during your procedure and your overall health at the time of the surgery. You’ll receive thorough post-procedure instructions before your visit, and following those guidelines will make a world of difference in your recovery.
